New Town Hall Prague

The New Town Hall is participating in this year’s 19th Prague Museum Night, during which you can visit Prague’s most famous museums and other participating institutions throughout the city. This unique event offers a rare opportunity to explore the cultural riches of our city in a truly special atmosphere, and before the coronavirus pandemic, tens of thousands of people attended it every year. This year, after a hiatus of several years, it will certainly be no different… The New Town Hall is one of Prague’s national cultural monuments, and its history began shortly after the founding of Prague’s New Town by Charles IV in 1348. Currently, exhibitions, concerts, festivals, wedding ceremonies, and other cultural or social events are held here in unconventional ceremonial spaces that are not normally open to the public. However, during Prague Museum Night, you can explore them. You can view the Baroque CHAPEL on the first floor of the tower, originally a Gothic chapel, later dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. Wenceslas, patron saint of the Czech lands. In 1722, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style, elements of which have been preserved, such as the central vault decorated with a fresco depicting the allegory of Law and Justice, and the profiled entrance portal. The chapel has been restored. - The GREAT HALL on the first floor of the tower is open to visitors; its walls feature remnants of 16th-century murals, and there are three columns in the center - The COUNCIL CHAMBER on the ground floor is open for viewing; it is furnished with beautiful period furniture, and its centerpiece is the original painted wooden ceiling - A tour of the MÁZHAUS, a Gothic columned hall on the ground floor with a stone floor, vaulted ceiling, and remnants of original wall paintings - Tour of the original STATUE of Neptune, carved from fine sandstone, in the wedding entrance hall on the ground floor, created between 1875 and 1877 by sculptor Bohuslav Schnirch - Tour of the cobblestone COURTYARD with a fountain and well, featuring cushions by sculptor Veronika Psotková for visitors to sit on
